Starting treatment: Tom

It is recommended that treatment with HIV medicines (called antiretroviral therapy, or ART for short) should be offered to anyone diagnosed as HIV positive. People living with HIV that take ART and become undetectable, live longer and healthier lives than those who don’t. Taking ART also reduces the risk of HIV transmission.

Hear Tom discuss the difficulties he had talking about his HIV with his doctors after he was first diagnosed. Following an accident at home, he realised he needed to begin treatment, and became involved in a study looking at the effects of early HIV treatment.
