HIV Diagnosis: the Story of Helen and Rosa

After her husband died and she was left a single mother, Helen received the devastating news that she was HIV positive. Until that point HIV had never even crossed her mind. After her HIV diagnosis, Helen made the difficult decision to leave her son in Uganda so that she could receive the treatment she needed to live well with HIV. After 5 long years, she was reunited with her then 12-year-old son. Now all Helen wants is to make up for lost time.

On her journey with HIV Helen has faced many obstacles, yet her perseverance for the sake of her son is inspiring. She has been able to overcome great mental strife by separating her identity from the virus stating, “I am still my father’s daughter, I am my son’s mother. The virus has nothing to do with me.”
